Just curious....couldn't the same be said about any gambling?...about anybody that ever steps into a casino?

Maybe not the astronomical odds against someone that does...but still odds against them keeping their money.

Think of lottery at the bottom of the barrel of any gambling....right down there with KENO. But for a chance to win $640million with just $1...you have to pay somehow...and hence, the crazy odds. If you want better odds, or want to win less than the crazy amount, you usually have to pay for that by laying out more. If someone walks into a casino, just once in a year, with the average $250 spent in lottery for a year...the overwhelming majority, both the lottery player, and the casino player, will walk out with nothing.

One last thing...in NYS, the lottery dollar does not go straight to government. It is allotted this way:

For fiscal year 2006, 56% of all revenue, or more than $3.8 Billion, was paid out in prizes to winners, while 32%, or $2.2 Billion, was given to local school districts in the Aid to Education program. The remaining 12%, about $783 Million, goes to vendor commissions (6%), contractor fees and various other operating expenses.

So, of your average $250 spent on lottery each year in NYS (according to 2006 figures):

$140 was returned in prizes
$80 went to school aid (representing 15% of total state school aid, annually)
$30 went to vendor commissions and operating costs

Similar to Casino gambling dollars, the largest amount is returned in prizes for the lucky few. and the smallest amout is given to the Casino to pay their bills. The difference in NYS, is schools make out with the middle money.

That was fun while it lasted. I'm here so you all know how my numbers turned out.

We should also have lotto in NV so that the poor could subsidize our schools too just like Cali does. Smart people will play in casinos where they have some chance of winning and others will play the lotto where they most likely will have no chance of winning but won't be in smokey loud casinos like me.

The dream is worth something. And I would rather pay a 'tax' that has some chance of of a return. Even if it is astronomical. Someone wins! I wish I had had a ticket but I didn't want to wait through the line.

I think the lotto should be here. We have everything else. Why not the lottery?

The one's opposed to a Nevada lottery are the casino owner's. I guess they have a lot of clout with the Nevada Legislature. They really do need to get a lottery here. Not only could it help the schools, but I think part of the proceeds should also go to senior's and the poor. Help them all.
The casino owner's are so worried that less people will spend money losing in their casino's, but people have already been doing that. Why sit there mindlessly while they suck every last penny out of your purse? Pay a buck or two, pick some numbers and you have the same chance of winning as inside the casino's. At least with a lotto ticket, when you win, you win big!

The people who go to the casinos would still go to the casinos, and they wouldn't spend a bit less than they already do there, if Nevada had a lottery. The money could be well used for programs that need the money. The casino owners would still get what they get now.

+1

The casino gamblers primarily go for the rush, which isn't as immediate with Lotto/Powerball. People like me who rarely go to the casinos would pick up a lotto while at 7-11 though.

There is one major advantage to playing the lottery in California over Arizona, and surprisingly it is TAXES.

California charges no State tax on lottery winnings .
Arizona charges a State Tax over $5,000 in winnings. (5% for Arizona residents, 6% for non-residents like us Nevadans).

As for our other neighboring states (for any Northern Nevadans reading this post) Oregon charges 8% over $5k, Idaho charges 7.8% over $5k and Utah has no lottery. -- The worst state to play the lottery in - New Jersey with a 10.8% state lottery tax. (figures found from usamega.com/powerball-jackpot.asp).

Was actually doing the math on MegaMillions:
1.5 Billion in sales reported in the news. Approximately $760 million was paid out in prizes BEFORE TAXES (assuming the 3 big winners take the annuity and other factors like multipliers & CA's pari-mutual prize structure -- numbers pulled from megamillions.com). Again apx $610,000 + will be given to retailers for incentive bonuses (for selling the 3 big winners -- reported in the news). For estimation purposes well say $775 million paid out.

So that leaves roughly $725 million confiscated by the government (lottery commissions) BEFORE TAXES right from the top. So after all the big winners pay their mandatory minimum 25% federal tax and any state taxes. The government stands to make nearly 1 BILLION dollars from one lottery game . And they say the lottery is a poor tax. I think they're right

<<I'm also using government here loosely - feds, state, county, city -- even education (public, at least) is a government entity, I am aware that not all 1 billion will go into politician pockets or general funds>> And yes I bought 1 ticket with the multiplier, out $2, but still had fun daydreaming about all the what ifs.

OK....time for a history lesson....

back in the 70's the Grand and Glorius Penal Colony of Gnu Jersey [home to da jersey shoah] decided to legalize gaming....The Tax revenues would go DIRECTLY to Senior Citizen Programs.....[who wouldnt vote for that? mo money for yo mama]

The voters voted it in unanimously....the tax revenues went directly to Seniors....and all the money that HAD been going to seniors went to other places.....rersult....Seniors 0 Political slugs 1.

Yes I would love a lottery....[I don't play but it would get some $ back] but it will NOT increase the programs that need money.....the crooked gubmint will still get theirs

It isn't so much a tax on the poor as it is a tax on people who are bad at math. Throughout history, people who are bad at math have been fleeced by people who are good at math.

The lottery is an unbelievably bad deal that offers a microscopic chance to win an unbelievable amount of money. People fixate on the "unbelievable amount of money" part, and ignore the "bad deal" and the "microscopic" part.

"Well, someone's gotta win," they say.

And someone's gotta get killed in a freak accident involving a meteor, a lightning strike, and a simultaneous earthquake. Roughly the same chance as winning half a billion dollars. Probability giveth. But it mostly taketh away.
